Kaziranga Safari Guide: Zones, Timings and How to Plan

By the 7 Sister Ridezz team in Guwahati. Published 17 Oct 2026. About 1 min read.

Quick answer

Kaziranga has jeep safaris in the Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agaratoli) and Burapahar ranges, plus early-morning elephant safaris. The park is usually open from November to April. Book slots early in peak season and plan 2 nights.

When to go

The park usually opens in November and closes for the monsoon around May. December to March is peak season with the best weather.

The safari ranges

  • Central (Kohora): the most popular, close to most resorts.
  • Western (Bagori): known for high rhino density.
  • Eastern (Agaratoli): good for birdlife and quieter.
  • Burapahar: a smaller, hilly range.

Jeep or elephant?

Jeep safaris cover more ground and run morning and afternoon. Elephant safaris run at dawn in limited numbers and get you close to rhinos in tall grass.

Getting there

Kohora is about 200 km from Guwahati, 4 to 5 hours by road. Private cars are not allowed on safari tracks; you park at the range office and take a registered safari jeep.

Suggested plan

Arrive on day 1 afternoon, do an elephant safari and a jeep safari on day 2, and drive back on day 3. See the Kaziranga trip page.
