Guwahati is the gateway to the seven sister states of Northeast India. Here is how far each state is by road, what to see, which need an Inner Line Permit, and how our tour packages work.
The gateway to the Northeast
Almost every trip to Northeast India starts in Guwahati. The airport and railway station connect the whole country, and good roads lead to all seven sister states. Our office at Lokhra is on the city's southern side, close to the highways to Shillong and Upper Assam.
Each state at a glance
- Assam (capital Dispur): Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga's one-horned rhinos, Majuli river island and the tea gardens of Upper Assam. No permit needed.
- Meghalaya (Shillong): about 100 km and 3 hours from Guwahati. Living root bridges, Dawki's clear Umngot river, Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong. No permit needed.
- Arunachal Pradesh (Itanagar): Tawang, Sela Pass, Dirang and Ziro Valley. Tawang is about 450 km, best done over two days. ILP needed.
- Nagaland (Kohima): about 340 km, 9 hours via Dimapur. The Hornbill Festival in December and the Dzükou Valley trek. ILP needed.
- Manipur (Imphal): about 480 km, 12 hours via Kohima. Loktak Lake's floating islands and the women-run Ima Market. ILP needed.
- Mizoram (Aizawl): about 470 km, 12 hours via Silchar. A hill-top capital, Reiek peak and quiet mountain roads. ILP needed.
- Tripura (Agartala): about 500 km, 13 hours via Shillong and Silchar. Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal and the Unakoti rock carvings. No permit needed.
How our tour packages work
1. Tell us the states, dates and number of people on WhatsApp.
2. We suggest a route, the right car (a 4x4 for Tawang, an Innova or tempo traveller for groups) and a day-by-day plan.
3. Choose self-drive, or a car with an experienced local driver who knows the hill roads.
4. Pay a small advance to confirm. The rest is paid at pickup.
Good to know
- Hill roads are slow. Plan 30 to 40 km per hour in the mountains.
- Avoid driving after dark on hill roads, and keep a buffer day in monsoon (June to September).
- Carry your ILP, licence, ID and car papers at every check post.
Cars start from Rs 999 a day. See all tour packages or cars and prices.
